RESELLERS WILL be hard pushed to sell Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center this year because there is neither consumer pull nor channel understanding, a situation not helped by a shortage on demo stock. The problem, according to Hugh Symons director Salim Wilson, is that the XP Media Center is not a traditional technology sell and that resellers have to get their heads around the idea of a concept sell. | ||

| That's not correct, JWM. I can dl MCE v1 or v2 right now from MSDN and install it. No new computer required. |

Nice to see you are still around BobSmith; if I remember correctly MSDN software is not supposed to be used in production systems.

| Yes, you are correct that MSDN subscriptions offer development/testing licenses only. I only meant to point out that if you have a subscription, you can try it out without getting new hardware. I don't know if this hold true for non dev licenses as well. IIRC, MCE v2 can install on any MCE v1 system, so you don't need new hardware to upgrade. |

Yes, it's a technicality, but I can, in fact, download MCE v1 or v2 right now and install it. I can install it on my ancient PIII 850 laptop with a 32MG vid card. I didn't say the general public could do likewise, but I certainly can. So, I wasn't fabricating the truth. You just assumed a little more than you should have if you thought I meant that Microsoft made MCE v1 and v2 available to the average consumer and not OEM only. Also, since, IIRC, v2 can be installed as an upgrade to v1, you only need new hardware once. If you have a v1 machine, you can upgrade only the software. True IF the the upgrade is made available to existing users. This make me uncomfortable because the decision is to make it available or not is left to... hardware sellers! I am one of the unlucky people who bought a Toshiba PocketPc that cannot be upgraded to Win2003 because the company decided to screw up existing users. I strongly believe that software and hardware companies have different agendas and leaving the control of how to distribute software to the hardware builder is wrong; it is wrong for the customers and, consequentially, is wrong for software producers like MS.
