Microsoft to make changes in Windows, Explorer over patent dispute | |

Microsoft said it will make modest changes to its Windows operating system and Internet Explorer browser because of a patent violation.
The move, which had been expected, is a response to an August verdict that Microsoft violated a patent held by Eolas Technologies. Microsoft intends to appeal the ruling once it's been made final, spokesman Mark Murray said.
The jury awarded Eolas $521 million, or $1.47 for each copy of Internet Explorer sold between November 1998 and September 2001. | ||

Did the taxpayer foot the bill for this one?
When did anyone pay money for Internet Explorer? Does anybody expect Eolas to accept Microsoft’s claim that the new IE will be free of Eolas' patents? This case is far from over. |

When did anyone pay money for Internet Explorer?
During the 90s, Internet Explorer was sold at retail (along with some bonus applications, IIRC). The main customers were likely those that didn't want to spend time downloading it over modem. It also likely increased awareness of the product. Does anybody expect Eolas to accept Microsoft’s claim that the new IE will be free of Eolas' patents? There's no reason not to. I think Eolas would rather take the money and run rather than risk losing if they persisted. I'm hoping MS wins on appeal, however. |

montanagrizzly - tax payer? This lawsuit was brought by a private company Eolas.
He decided he wanted to cash in on the Microsoft money train... MS's response is, "whatever, we're going to change the HTML spec instead." Some have questioned this move by Microsoft, because it will end up disrupting existing websites. But this move was necessitated by Eolas who threatened to not license the technology to Microsoft, but to competing browsers instead. This is an example of Patent law being used inappropriately. |

that was an unprofessional move on Eolas' part. |

| #9 and #11, they can sue who ever they think is violating their patent. They are targeting Microsoft because they are the biggest potential violator and has the most resources. If they beat MS then the others are sure to fall in line. |
