Why Microsoft is buying Lindows for California residents | |

At the top of the MSfreePC.com home page, it says, "In connection with a legal settlement, you may be eligible for a FREE PC and allowed to purchase up to $100 worth of software paid for by Microsoft®!" The catch is that you must live in California. And to use MSfreePC.com to collect your share of the Microsoft antitrust settlement booty, you must accept it in the form of Lindows products, a major piece of irony that Lindows CEO Michael Robertson says is not in the least accidental. I asked Robertson, "Aren't you afraid that Microsoft won't love you any more after this move?" A rough paraphrase of his answer, perhaps distorted since both he and I were talking on cell phones at the time: "Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. They weren't my friends before this!" | ||

Wow, it looks like Microsoft wins with this one. I mean, nobody in their right mind would want a Lindows based system. Even if it were free.
The only way I can see this as being good for California, is if they make it legal to choose between Lindows, and Windows XP. Then you'd be talkin my language. LOL |

You know, it's funny. People moan that MS charges too much, but if they charge less then they moan that MS is dumping or undercutting and extending their monopoly. Can't have it both ways.
I've used evey MS OS for the PC and I've used every version of Lindows, and I can tell you that Lindows is a piece of crud. If it works it works only marginally well. When it doesn't work then you are SOL because there's no way to get it to work. Additionally, Lindows runs everything as root--there goes the much-touted enhanced security that Linux provides. Now you have a system no more secure than Windows 95 and it doesn't run the apps you might need....wonderful. You want Linux? Fine, but at least you could to is get one of the full distros like Slackware or even Mandrake. Anything out there is better than Lindows. It's an abomination. |

| What the hell does this have to do with cali splinter? Lindows is just jumping in the middle of the settlement--it's not like california got together and decided that they want most of the settlers to purchase Lindows software with their vouchers. |

Actual to qualify, all you had to do is purchase the software packages in Ca, not needed to be a resident. I doubt that they will get to the full amount of the settlement. The free PC will not be shipped until Jun04 at the earliest, settled now, then wait for a while, (10 months).
