Detractors worry about security threats and potential abuses that could result from Microsoft's sole control of the Passport database. Of even greater concern to some is the potential for identity theft if the Passport servers are compromised. I can honestly understand why some people are apprehensive about Passport.
But I also think that it's an irrational reaction. Here is why. Most people use the exact same password for everything. Web sites. E-mail. Screen saver. Etc. Even without passport, you're still opening up yourself to wide spread security compromises if somebody figures out your password. If they know your password for one site, and suspect you use another site, they're going to try that same password again. With passport, that danger does not go away, but I don't think it is made any worse. In fact, I'd bet it's more secure. You can bet the bank that Microsoft is making damn sure passport is as secure as possible. They're spending many millions on it. Can you say the same for BuyCoolStuff.com? If you use the same password for BuyCoolStuff.com as you do for everything else, all it takes is for somebody to crack the weakest link, and they've got it all. The other concern over passport is privacy. People are affraid Microsoft will spy on them, or sell their info, or whatever. Why? Has Microsoft done this in the past? Nope. Wouldn't it hurt them a LOT more if they did this than if they didn't? Yup. It doesn't make any sense. |
