How Good Is the Windows Server 2003 Basic Firewall? | |

I recently spent a few weeks testing Windows Server 2003 by using the Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS) 2003 release candidate (RC). One of my goals was to evaluate the efficacy of the RRAS firewall. The basic firewall is a new component in Windows 2003 that uses an enhanced version of the firewall software that Microsoft first shipped in Windows XP. My test system had two network adapters, one for the internal network and one for the Internet connection. I enabled the RRAS basic firewall on the network adapter that's connected to the Internet and configured the server to accept incoming and outgoing SMTP mail, to permit secure and nonsecure browser access to the internal Web site and to the Remote Web Workplace, and to accept incoming VPN PPTP and Layer Two Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) connections. | ||

| It's a good, easy to setup little firewall, which actually stealths all ports you don't mark as open. |

I think that knowing what is outgoing is just as important as what is incomming, consisidering the huge problems that exist with webbugs, Trojan Horses, SpyWare, SPAM, Viruses, etc...

#1 "keeps a log"
http://www.winnetmag.com/WindowsServer2003/Index.cfm?ArticleID=40328 says that: "I also discovered that the basic firewall has no logging capability, which by itself is a showstopper. If your firewall doesn't monitor port activity in real time and in a log file, you can't determine whether your system is being probed from the outside world, which renders the firewall completely ineffective." So which is it? Does it a keep a log or not? In any case, realise that this firewall is for a SERVER not a desktop computer! Whilst the basic firewall capabilities are more than enough for home users I would hope that a REAL firewall would be installed on a server - one where you can configure incoming and outgoing ports and TCP and UDP separately. Zone Alarm is for home users only and is a complete joke - try using Sygate at least - although there are better firewalls for servers. |
