Microsoft tool learns new patching trick | |

Microsoft on Wednesday gave IT managers a speedier way to get their patches installed by making it possible to use an existing Windows utility to deliver and deploy service packs. Microsoft said this week that Software Update Services can now be used to deploy service packs, whereas in the past, IT managers had to use a separate patch management system, such as Systems Management Server (SMS), to get the packs installed. The current version of SUS, SUS 1.0 with SP1, will not only provide service pack delivery, but will also roll out Windows XP SP1, Windows 2000 SP4 and future service packs for Windows 2000, XP and Windows Server 2003, according to Microsoft. "It's been one of the most requested features of SUS," said Rod Trent, publisher of myITforum.com, a Web community dedicated to SMS and other Windows management issues. "This allows companies that don't have another patch management system in place to provide service pack delivery for free." | ||

Gee, that's odd. Works fine at work... and at home... and at a few customer sites.
Maybe it's a user error? ...and approving all the patches is a nightmare - not way to approve multiple patches!! Yeah, clicking more than one checkbox is certainly a pain in the butt, isn't it? How dare they?!? This post was edited by mikekol on Friday, September 19, 2003 at 10:49. |

Well the thing is that you need XP SP1...
No, you don't. You can install the Automatic Update client (which is included with SP1 for XP and SP3 for 2k) from here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/recommended/susclient/default.asp It can be installed on Win2k SP2 or XP RTM. And no, I don't believe that home users will get the SPs pushed to them automatically, though - perhaps - they should. |

What I'd like to see is something that I can install on my laptop that allows me to connect to another computer, then that other computer can pull all the available updates from my laptop. I'm really not into the idea of running win2k server on my laptop just to put SUS on it. Anyone here know of anything like SUS that'll run on XP? Currently I just keep all the big updates (SP, DirectX, etc) on cd.
If I could set up my laptop to be a local Windows Update alike that would be awesome! |
