Microsoft wants to put your business on the map: The company has released MapPoint 2004, an update to its extensive mapping and data-analysis application for small and medium-size businesses. The $299 application combines the functions of consumer mapping products, such as Microsoft's own Streets & Trips, and free online mapping services, such as MapQuest. It also adds the capability to perform thematic mapping and analysis of demographic and consumer data. | ||

MapPoint 2004 was posted on the download site for MSDN Universal Subscribers yesterday. It is considered part of the Microsoft Office System but not one of the core products (same situation as Data Analyzer) so it is not available in any bundle. You can only get it by itself. Part of the reason is that it doesn't appeal to as wide an audience as the core products, but the other reason that there are regional issues with distribution of MapPoint. Not just the usual localization issues (e.g. language, currency format, date format) but other constraints which are due to the geographic data contained on CD 2. On North America, we take for granted that the borders between countries are undisputed (and even that the legitimacy of each country is undisputed) but there can be huge issues with distributing map data elsewhere in the world. To avoid hindering the distribution of other Office apps (which can distribute their U.S. English versions very widely), MapPoint is packaged separately.

The same restraints do apply to Encarta but the question was about MapPoint being part of Office. Encarta is not related to Office in any way. Also, Office is marketed worldwide. Encarta is not. For example, Microsoft sells Office in China. Microsoft does not sell Encarta in China. I'm sure you'd have no problem finding pirated copies of Encarta in China, but they're not from Microsoft.
