A Longhorn Delay? Not Quite | |

News about a potential delay in Windows Longhorn, the next major update to Windows XP, has quickly evolved from mindless analysts predictions to so-called fact, with several major tech news outlets reporting on Microsoft's supposed setbacks. But Microsoft has never really announced a Longhorn release date, opting instead to refer to dates that are usually a few years out, owing to the complexity of what the company hopes to achieve with the Longhorn release. But that doesn't stop half the tech industry from reporting on a delay, and if this is how the next two years are going to go, it's going to feel like an eternity. | ||

They'll just be getting to Beta 1 in early 2004 (Dev Preview is at PDC next month).
Longhorn may RTM in late 2004 , but it won't likely reach store shelves untill early 2005 unless it RTMs in or before October. Assuming it RTMs in that timeframe, it could possibly start shipping on larger OEM's computers in 2004, but I don't think it's likely. In short, assuming a late 2004 RTM, the only users using Longhorn in 2004 will be private testers, MSDN members, and CPP customers (RTM for testers and maybe MSDN, and an RC for CPP). Though with the demand it will generate (and has already generated), those 3 groups are likely to make up a large number of active users anyway (and, of course, there's the pirates :-( ). |

| As far as graphics, the top tier requires a DX9 card with 64MB RAM (current as of WinHEC). Minimum display res for the new UI is 1024x768. A GeforceFX 5200 with 128MB is about $60-70 now. This should be no problem in 1-2 years. |

| Probably couldn't handle the top teir of graphics stuff, but they have tier 2, tier 1, and classic, you should be able to handle tier1. |

Given the current public requirements, it should be able to. You probably won't be able to run it in Tier 2 mode (full GUI acceleration via GPU) however. It should run in Tier 0 (Compatability mode) and Tier 1 (limited acceleration) though.
