Don't Rely On Microsoft, Trade Group Urges Homeland Security | |

The Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA) has urged the Department of Homeland Security to reconsider its decision to use Microsoft software on its desktop and server systems, citing "major security failures" created by the raft of vulnerabilities in the Redmond, Wash.-based developer's products. In a letter written Wednesday by Ed Black, the president and CEO of CCIA and addressed to Secretary Tom Ridge, head of Homeland Security, the trade group--which represents companies in the hardware manufacturing, software developing, system integrating, and other fields--accused Microsoft of being more interested in profits than in security. | ||

That's a great idea. Let's use Linux, because as everyone knows, there has never been a vulnerability for Linux.
Then, when someone tries to hack it, it will likely be someone very knowledgable about how to actually hack and compromise a system without anyone knowing it, as opposed to some loser in the mid-west who just makes worms that sap bandwidth for no reason. Great idea, DHS, we'll be much safer now. |

Using multiple platforms means that you now have to build support resources and knowledge that is capable of maintaining those platforms. Failing that, you are actually much less secure since you've increased your threat exposure.
The reality is that security has nothing to do with the particular platform, it has everything to do with process and policies. There are numerous resources out on the net which detail how to lock down assets running various platforms. There are numerous resources out on the net which provide timely security bulletins. Proactively deal with the problems identified in the security bulletins and you'll be safe. Pick your platform based on business technology need. Does it do what you need, does it offer ROI and quick turnaround? Learn to manage it, and manage it well. Don't let companies sell you a bill of goods that they can't deliver on. |

| How surprising. A press release from the Washington Lobbying Group funded by Microsoft's competitors. Perhaps their time might be better spend insuring they meet security standards like Common Criteria, so they would be eligible to bid on Government contracts. |

The abmer's just don't get it. CCIA rants; Apple rants; Linux rants. Ho Hum . . .
Meanwhile, Microsoft emphasizes what it has done, can do and will do to enhance users and businesses' computer experience. Instead of the above whiners copying the Windows UI and Microsoft's applications, they ought to be copying its marketing acumen. It is with good reason that Microsoft has been rated in the top ten in name recognition, favorable brand, most admired company, etc. by any number of measurers. It is amusing to see these dullards spew, though. |
