Symantec adds product activation | |

Security software and service company Symantec has added a controversial type of antipiracy technology to the new version of its main virus-zapping program. Norton Antivirus 2004, which Symantec announced Monday for release next month, will use product activation, an increasingly common technique to tie a copy of an application to a particular PC. Symantec plans to add activation to the rest of its consumer software line over the next year. Del Smith, senior product manger for Symantec, said activation is intended to protect consumers from widespread counterfeit copies of Symantec programs. The company estimates at least 3.6 million bogus copies of its programs are sold annually, causing headaches both for Symantec and unsuspecting buyers, who find out too late that the software isn't doing the job. "What consumers don't understand is that while those units may appear to be legitimate, there are a number of risks associated with pirated software...including the likelihood that it really isn't protecting their PC," Smith said. | ||

They may have picked a bad time to do this especially with MS releasing the PC Satifaction stuff. I offers anti-virus, firewall, and backup capabilities. People that don't like the activation may start looking else where and MS may be the one they turn to. MS will probably add it to the OS and home user will have to reason to buy other products. Hardcore users will probably want something a little more advanced but basic users (AOLers) will like it. I would not be surprised if MS gives it away for free or includes it in the next SP.

Hmm. I actually just bought Norton Antivirus 2003 the day they announced this, not knowing 2004 would be coming out.
Now I wonder if I should just stick with 2003 or try to take it back and get 2004. Looks like the only new feature they added was product activation. |

They are saying this Product Activation is for North America only. That doesn't sit well with me. I think it should be all or none. |

| Now I'm really glad I use PC-Cillin. :~)- Seriously though, MS got away with activation on Windows and Office because these are things you really can't do without (in most cases). There's just too much competition in the AV market to fool around like this. I think it will come back and bite them. |

| The Majoraty of the people who buy the product wont have any problem with it having activeation. The only one to complain will be the 3.6 million that have a pirated version. |

| I still dont understand the need for antivirus software for all classes of users. I've never used it in 10 years of computing... and I've never had a single virus that I've known about. Of course in my IT job, I make sure its on everyone's computer. Seems to me, its really a matter of user intelligence in knowing what to open and what to install. That's why I'm a bit surprised to see some of you using it... people I would consider advanced users. |

Mooresa, I'm surprised an admin wouldn't use it himself. The concept is "defense in depth." Yes, a worm might get through my hardware firewall. Yes, it get through my software firewall. Yes, I might have an unpatched system. Oh, fourth level of defense, my AV software caught it. No biggie, still safe.
BTW, Microsoft considers it a best practice for all users, not just the ones who think they are smart enough not to need it. |

Some of you are absolutely pathetic. Product Activation does not change ANYTHING unless you are pirating the software.
In fact, I would say it's somewhat immoral to switch just because of the the Product Activation as you are support the software pirates. |

#16 No need for name calling - Product Activation does absolutely nothing against pirates, pirates have VLK versions and cracks. Product Activation does almost as much against "casual copiers" too, as they are now being told "oh yeah, after you burn yourself a copy of this cd, you will need to run xxx.exe to get rid of activation.
Those people who are currently running NAV (illegally) will continue to do so with the next version - they're happy with their free product, they're not going to change. The only people who may swap to another product are those that pay for it and feel strongly enough about Product Activation to see through the layer of bullshit of the "this is to stop casual copying of our software" line. |

m00: The fact of the matter is all you have to do is say 'yes' and it activates, that's it. There is no hassle.
Also, your idea that only people who proffit off of software should have to pay for it is one of the worst ideas I've ever heard. People are still using the software, just because they aren't making any money doing it does not make a difference, they are using it. If you have no personal means of making money, ie, a job, should you be able to get a car for free? But you aren't going to be making any proffit from using it... why not? Now there are a few cases where the idea can work, like say, what Maya does. They have a version for home users that is fully functional, it just puts a watermark on all your work, and it is free. If you use it to make money, you shell out the large amount of cash for it. This, in effect, gets you hooked on their software at an early stage of what could become a career. |
