Microsoft Corp. is developing a licensing program for third-party instant messaging clients and services that want to continue accessing its .Net Messaging Service, but it comes with a catch. Microsoft can't guarantee that formal licensing terms and conditions will be ready in time to meet the Oct. 15 cutoff it set for blocking unauthorized IM clients and services from connecting into its messaging network because of security and privacy concerns. | ||

Hmm.. what happend to Microsofts call for an 'open standard' for IM? Can't really call this a good way to make that happen.

So, let me get this straight: open standard means free? Um, no. Rather than "open," which is very ambiguous, let's use a different term. Let's say there is a standand, which is licensed according to RAND (Reasonable And Non Discriminatory) terms. RAND governs the licensing for VHS, CD, DVD, MPEG, WM9, etc.
If Microsoft took their marbles, went home, and said, "get the hell off our network" to any non-MSN/Windows Messenger client, that's neither open nor RAND. If they say, "Pay us a reasonable fee and play to till the cows come home" then that is both open and RAND. In this instance, Microsoft has not contradicted its former stance. |

Bob, you missed the key feature of what people are refering to as "open."
The standard would not be controlled by one proprietary entity but would rather be a compromise of technology from multiple sources with the key elements determined by vote or some consortium process. In which case, this is NOT open. |

| Jerk, good point. But since Microsoft has never supported an open IM standard (is there one?), it's not like their recent actions are a change from any previous position. |
