Major power failure across Northeast | |

A fire at a major New York power plant caused cascading blackouts throughout the Northeast, the Midwest and eastern Canada late Thursday afternoon, knocking out electricity to millions of people in New York, Toronto, Detroit, Cleveland and elsewhere. FEDERAL POWER REGULATORS did not identify the power plant, but CNN reported that a fire had been reported at a transformer at the Consolidated Edison plant in New York City. Most of the affected cities are linked on the same regional power grid. Officials of the Homeland Security Department said there were no indications that the blackout was the work of terrorists. | I don't get why they are pre-empting regular TV about this... I'll bet those people who are affected know about it already... Anybody who's been without power (probably everyone) knows all you can really do is wait. |

| Jerk, what good does the news do for me in Kansas City? Why would they pre-empt local programming for that? I think some people are making too big of a deal about it (mostly, I think, because most major news organizations are based in New York City). |

maybe because local programming in Kansas City is garbage so no one will miss a thing?
i.e. I'm not trying to be a dick, but the same things which you may not have any sympathy for... others, likewise, may not give a turd about what you are concerned about. On the other hand, if there's a place in this country that other people may care about (for many and obvious reasons: business travelers, vacation travelers, family members, etc...) there are quite a few people all over this country who would want to know this... And it is parts of Canada, almost all of New York, and many parts of New England. This is pretty big and not just about NYC. And of course, it's not 5:15 ALL OVER the country, is it? It's only 3:15 here... a perfect time to preempt. But then again, what am I thinking, my mind should be on whether or not people in Kansas know if it's going to rain tomorrow.... | I certainly do feel sorry for those people who live there, since it's very hot, but at the same time I do think this is being way over done. We've had snow storms where the power has been out for three or more days (up to a week for some people). I'm sorry for the people there, but I just don't see why this has become such a big deal. Whatever, though... it's nothing worth arguing about. |

Maybe because it's affecting like a fifth of the country and parts of Canada, probably about a quarter of the wealth of the country for a day, and is the biggest metro in the country and the most important, most popular in the world...
Are you suggesting that the rest of the world gives a sh!t about a few tens of thousands of people who CHOOSE to live in Kansas? Sorry, dude, I don't mean to argue, and I certainly don't care, but I think your priorities and concerns are way out of whack and are distorted. |

Here in Holland we had a 'code red' situation (predicting nation wide power failures due to the heatwave) only a couple of days ago. Nothing really happend then but it's kind of ironic to see it happening on the other side of the ocean now. Hope it doesn't last too long though.
Btw #2: I doubt it will have anything to do with the whole blaster worm-thing, but the fact that CNN is allready speculating on it still means bad PR for MS. mOO, again, I don't give a sh1t so I don't know why you'd think I'd care if the rest of the world gives a sh1t or not...
...and did the local news get pre-f'ing-empted throughout the world? No, so what the fck? Do you have a point? Did I sound like some great big patriot to you? ...but the point is pretty f'ing basic: if there is a single city in the entire world that anyone or everyone is going to care about, which would win in a poll? Amsterdam? Johannesburg? Pnom Phen? Liverpool? Or the N. Y. C.? Exactly. ...and again, it's Detroit, Cleveland, Toronto, NYC, Albany, New Jersey, 4+ major airports, the entire US auto manufacturing industry, most of the US financial industry, a 1/3 of the cell networks in North America, 20+ million people, etc, etc, etc... i.e. it's a pretty big story that could have ramifications for anyone in any part of the world unlike the f'ing weather report in Kansas City. It's amazing how self-centered people have become in this modern era.
I was at work and someone noticed that Ops center display was flashing red, as our New York and Detroit offices went offline. We're in Minneapolis, but our Ops Center has CNN running 24x7 up on the board and I'm sure they appreciated knowing that the reason we were seeing failures was because of a major power outage. |

Maybe I just didn't make myself clear... I do think this is big news, but there is other, what I believe to be, more important stuff going on in the world. I don't think pre-empting normal programming for this is important (although I don't think pre-empting normal programming for much of anything is). It's bad that this happened in such heat, but they are predicting almost all electricity will be back by morning.
And yeah, mooresa, you're right... KC has about 2-3 million people, and it's actually in Missouri. |

It's Shark Week on the Discovery Channel. On one documentary, they had an effects company build mechanical replicas of a bull, great white, and tiger shark so they could recreate a couple of attacks and measure the sharks' attack/biting force.
The incident that spurred the tests was a shark expert who had his the back half of his leg (calf region) bitten off by a bull shark. That should hold you over for a while :-) |
