Microsoft beats Apple to the music | |

Microsoft has stolen a march on rival Apple by signing a deal with a digital music company backed by singer Peter Gabriel to launch the first internet download service in Europe to sell individual tracks. The new venture will be accessed through Microsoft's Windows Media Player software and will allow users to download songs from a choice of more than 200 000 by major artists. Apple's iTunes service, which sold more than 6,5-million tracks in three months since launching in the US, has been heralded as a success because it allows users to download tracks at a set price and then copy them to CDs or portable players. | ||

| Of course others were doing this before Apple. However, Apple, so far, is the only one whose done it right. Did Liquid Audio have support of all five major record lables? Did they have the simplicity of the iTunes Music Store? No...because I've tried it out in the past. Liquid Audio is a cool app, but it's no iTunes. Get your facts straight, kid. |

#2, you are correct.
Lots of companies have 'sold' download music, but no company has provided the necessary (read: Complete, total and unrestricted) burn-rights to make it truly useful or a success until the IMS came along. Is it perfect? Nope. The partial albums, missing artists and a half-dozen other annoyances prevent it from being so. However, from a consumers standpoint it's the only service that gives you your money's worth for what you do buy. And that simply cannot be argued. As for this Microsoft service, well, let's just wait and see what the precisely buyers rights are before getting all excited. TL |
