One might assume that Microsoft Corp.'s booth at the LinuxWorld Expo in San Francisco this week would get the same reception as a visiting team's fan in the hometown bleachers. But that's not the case, a Microsoft executive says, despite the fact that the Redmond company sees the open-source operating system as a serious threat. "People are pleased to see us here and part of the conversation," said Jason Matusow, Microsoft's Shared Source Initiative manager. "We certainly want to be here in terms of participation," he said, explaining that the majority of people at the show are working in mixed software environments, with programs such as Linux, Microsoft Windows and others. | ||

Good. Sounds like the Zealots are being pushed to the wayside in the Linux world.
Of course now that Linux has sold out the Zealots will start promoting something different... |

I regard false ammunition as taking something essentially out of context and making it the primary issue. If we were just talking about RMS' rants, then yeah, I could see that point. But we're not... We're talking about things like this: https://www.redhat.com/opensourcenow/bill_opensource.html I find that law terribly offensive. I used to work for a VAR that sold customized software to county governments. That law would have put us out of business by forcing us to give our secrets to our competitor out of Chicago who was larger and had more cash. If the OSS people would come to their senses and realize that the important aspect is just having the source to the program, and that free redistribution is objectionable to most people in the computer industry... they might be taken seriously. |

Agreed. The problem with the OSS world is that they can't see the forest for the trees. If you want interoperability, it's all about open standards and open data interchange formats. It's not about open source, more specifically it's not about open licensing. "If a government said tomorrow that Microsoft *COULD* have the contract *IF* they provided support for the OASIS document standard then I would have no issue, however, I would have an issue if they said that they wouldn't use Microsoft because they're closed source. " Exactly. The first point is reasonable, the second is what makes me label the OSSers as zealots. |
