Like a lot of people, the Safir family is bombarded with spam. Anna Safir doesn't want her 12-year-old opening the unwanted emails. "[Reads] 'World's Most Beautiful Women', I don't know what that would be. 'Check out some striking Russian brides'," said Safir. Consumer Reports says your first line of defense is spam controls offered by your Internet service provider. See if those help. Your second option, which Dean Gallea just tested, is buying some anti-spam software. These programs have names like SpamKiller, iHate Spam and Spam Sleuth. He also checked out junk mail filters that come with Microsoft Outlook and Apple's Mac OS X email program. | ||

The best can be had for free.
First off, if it ain't based on Bayesian filtering, it's not worth the time or effort. If you run Pop Mail - Use PopFile. It's awesome. If you use IMAP with Outlook, use SpamBayes. Both are free and mine are running at 99.85% accuracy after a weeks training, which is totally painless. TL |

I wonder if they tested Outlook 2002, or the beta of Outlook 2003. The Outlook 2003 spam filter is superb. The Outlook 2002 spam filter is a waste of time. |

But I like receiving emails about mail order brides from russia.
Although I haven't tried any of these offers yet, my greatest fear is that it turns out like that time I ordered the sea monkey's from the back of a comic book when I was a kid. What a major disappointment. |

Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 doesn't do convert to text only (not that I've found anyway), but it does block web beacons (images in HTML email) by default. Also, the junkmail filter is quite good. Since I started using it in February, not one piece of spam has gotten to my inbox. Occasionally, I have to fetch something from my junkmail folder and teach Outlook that it's a safe sender (web site registrations, new clients, friends who aren't in my contact list yet, etc.). I'm very impressed with it. |
