NEW YORK -- The biggest merger in high-tech history may be a financial success for Hewlett-Packard and the former Compaq Computer, but it hasn't made buyers of their computers any happier. Both brands picked up terrible grades in an annual PC-user satisfaction survey released today. Dell Computer, on the other hand, continued to shine. Overall, the 18,000 subscribers surveyed by PC Magazine were happier this year than in 2002 about the reliability of their computers and the available technical support. | ||

I with ya! Other than the G4 iMac I bought last year, I haven't bought an assembled PC in, geez, must be 10 years now. I build them all from scratch, and I get exactly what I want. I average 2-3 machines a year depending on how fast technology is changing. It's not necessarily cheaper, but it is a hell of a lot more satisfying! TL |

sphbecker - I lowered the noise level from my machines in two ways...
I bought new cases... specifically the Antec Performance II case(SX835 and SX1040), which has a large number of fan slots. I then went with more fans that move slightly less air but are quieter. I use Vantec silent fans in the front and Vantec thermal fans in the rear. Another thing I'm going to begin investigating is adding some Dynamat to the inside walls of my cases to dampen vibration resonating through the case. On top of that, most of the noise comes from the rear fans and reflects off the wall, so I'm thinking of placing a sheet of acoustic foam behind my computers. Something like Sonex, although maybe not quite so expensive. I'm relatively happy with my computers, but I think my main desktop needs an upgrade. I have a PIII-1.2Ghz I bought about 18 months ago. I looked into it, and I can buy a Intel 2.4Ghz P4 with hyperthreading and a new D865PERLL board with fast DDR RAM for like $500. I'll probably hold off on that til this fall and see if the 3.0Ghz is around the same price. My big thing is that the PIII board is limited to 512 Megs of RAM, and I really need 1 Gig for the types of stuff I'm doing. |

The problems with "Restore" CD's is the reason I have not bought a Media PC yet. I hope MS will decide to sell the OS separately because I am not going to struggle to set my computer the way I want.
