Athlon64 set for Sept. 22 release | |

AMD's press release schedule, accidentally made public in a mass e-mail on Monday, revealed that date for the unveiling of the Athlon64 for desktops and the Athlon64-M for notebooks. AMD declined to comment on the dates, but acknowledged that the document was an internal file accidentally released to the outside world. The document contains other interesting tidbits as well. Later this summer, the company is expected to announce that it is working with a Chinese organization to build the world's fastest supercomputer in China. Germany's Max Planck Institute, one of the world's premier research organizations, is also using Athlon-based computers, according to the documents. A new Opteron chip, the Opteron 246, is slated to debut on Aug. 4, according to the document. | ||

Cool!
I just hope they once again become the price/performance leader. In recent months, their pricing has not been very good compared to Intel, and that used to be their strong point. Intel has taken back a lot of market share because of this the first half of 2003. It looks as though if it costs the same, peope will buy Intel. I know I did this time. If the AMD has a much better price/performance ratio, then folks buy AMD. Like I used to. TL |

IA64 is incredibly BAD at the moment. IA64 is WAY to expensive to be run on a desktop, and still VERY expensive for a server.
Not to say that IA64 is bad in general, I think in the long run, it is the way to go. For now, x86-64 is your best bet for desktop 64bit computing on PCs. |

| parker: I'd say not, seeing where as both Intel and AMD chips have a basic RISC design internally, as well as just about every major chip on the market. |
