The Netcraft Web Server Survey is a survey of Web Server software usage on Internet connected computers. We collect and collate as many hostnames providing an http service as we can find, and systematically poll each one with an HTTP request for the server name. In the July 2003 survey we received responses from 42,298,371 sites. | ||

The inaccuracy inherent in Netcraft's "surveys" are that they correctly interpret the web server (i.e. IIS 6.0, Netscape, Webshere, etc.), but can not get the underlying operating system correct. For example, we useIIS 5.0 running on Windows 2000, but have one of our sites already using IIS 6.0 running on Windows 2003 and are transitioning to IIS 6.0 and Windows 2003 with the rest of them over the next several months. If you punch in our web site URL, the return is IIS 5.0 running on Solaris 8! Well, we all know that is not possible, but what is possible is that are firewalls are running the Solaris 8 OS. Other of our subsidiary sites our running Netscape. Netcraft shows them running on Linux. That is not true. They are running on Solaris 8, but the firewalls are running on Linux.

| That's a common thing with OS profiling. Fyodor (author of nmap) says the same thing. The scans can only go so deep...as if your firewall would let it probe deeper. Really, OS fingerprinting is dead. If you were to scan my home computer it would tell you 2 different stories. Sometimes it doesn't know what it is, other times it thinks it's a non-existant HP Switch of some sort. Works for me, since if they're confused, so would the would-be hacker. |

| Netcraft is really no longer relevant since what they measure is the old way the Internet grew, not the new way. |
