Microsoft Drops PC Controller Line | |

Microsoft announced today that, as of this month, they will halt development of their SideWinder series of PC joysticks, gamepads, steering wheels and force-feedback devices. The SideWinder lineup will still be available in stores as long as inventory remains in stock, and the company will continue producing keyboards, mice, and other non-game-related PC hardware. According to Microsoft representatives, the dropping of SideWinder "is a business decision that stems from the shrinking of worldwide sales figures". A Microsoft Japan representative told the Softbank Games website that the decision "also reflects a shift in the marketplace, including the rise of games that include better support for keyboard and mouse control." The company currently has no new PC game devices in development, and all SideWinder manufacturing lines have been halted as of the end of June. | ||

| They've got a point. I haven't used my joystick in like 3 years. It just sits in the cupboard. |

| I'd use my joystick if I had a good game to use it on... most games I play these days are FPS or RTS, and those are pretty much the only games coming out these days. |

| I suppose they are also concentrating on their Xbox division when it comes to this area? Future hardware releases? |

| I actually really hated the newest Sidwinder joystick, I thought it was both cheaply made and had very very poor button/throttle placement. |

This is kind of a shame. Their SideWinder FF Wheel is the best consumer class wheel on the market.
But, the fact that they have not updated the software in, oh, 5 years was an early sign. They also 'graced' this old software with WinXP WHQL certification without even fixing it, or even removing the install warnings that it was for Windows 98 only. I guess when you own the keys to the cert lab you can do anything you want. TL |
