The America Online-backed MusicNet downloading service is partnering with Microsoft to offer its songs in the Windows Media 9 format, the company said Thursday. BY MAKING SONGS available in Microsoft’s Windows Media 9 Series, MusicNet becomes the first music download service to offer tunes in multiple formats, said Ellie Hirschhorn, MusicNet’s executive vice president and general manager. For Microsoft, the MusicNet partnership opens a new distribution source for its digital song-playing software as it tries to gain traction in the online music business. | ||

| Sure has been alot of positive progress this year for the .wma format. Seems that Real's fate is starting to come into focus. |

How so? ("The fate of Real") MusicNet has a decent subscibership, but it's still offered to AOL members only. And it still supports Real Audio. In fact, from the article, it sounds as if they intend to support as many options as is possible. Plus, MusicNet only offers 36,000 songs. Not a very big service and not a significant deal.
