Microsoft Vows to Fix Patch Problems | |

DALLAS -- Microsoft will whittle down its stable of patch management tools from eight to two by the end of the year, according to the software giant's chief security strategist. During his keynote at Microsoft TechEd Tuesday, Scott Charney put it simply, "patch management is broken." Charney, who served as cybercrime chief at the Department of Justice for eight years, then vowed to repair the damage and ease the headache of patch management.

Charney said that the secure computing effort is ongoing. "We are now doing security audits on all our products as part of development. We have to do that, because the bad guys will innovate just like we do." Surely the 'bad guys' don't innovate anywhere close to the level that Microsoft innovates at! And isn't it a good thing that they are NOW, finally, performing security audits of all their products as PART of development! Next they'll be telling us that they are going to finally be unit-testing as part of their development! Those crazy guys at Microsoft! |

| They already do unit testing and integration testing. They also have to create threat models for products during the design phase. |

| Microsoft's threat modeling is highly sophisticated, until you compare it to the unbelievably secure threat modeling for open-source projects... "I'll release it to the public, and when security vulnerabilities are reported, I'll fix them the next time a StarTrek rerun is showing". |
