Microsoft to discontinue Internet Explorer for Mac? | |

Mac Daily News "Purveyors and consumers of Web content and software, already unsettled by the peace pact between former arch rivals Microsoft and AOL Time Warner, may be in store for an even more radical upset with Microsoft's stated plans to eliminate standalone versions of its Internet Explorer browser, reports Paul Festa, Staff Writer, CNET News.com. Festa continues, "The apparent move to discontinue standalone IE also makes Microsoft competitors Apple Computer and AOL appear prescient in their recent maneuvers to secure long-term access to browser technology. Apple in January launched its own browser, based on the open-source KHTML development project, and analysts at the time attributed the move to Apple's desire to maximize its independence from Microsoft and IE. The timing may have been just right, if the elimination of a standalone IE leads to the discontinuation of a version of the browser for the Macintosh OS." | ||

| this will only force mac users to use another browser. which in turn promotes competition. should be a good thing--unless the DOJ freaks out. |

No great loss. MSIE/Mac is honestly not that great. It _used_ to be, but not any more. There are now much better browsers.
There is a lot of odd stuff going on with Microsoft right now. AOL. The Browser thing. More to come I'm sure. It would be fun to be a fly on the wall in the DOJ offices right now :) TL |

Any business should now stop buying Macs. If the end of IE is near for the Mac, so is the end of Office. And therefore no one in his right mind would allow a Mac into a business with PC's. ------------------------------------------------------------ Wow....I wonder what it's like to live on your planet. On a more logical note, IE 5 for Mac OS 9 was awesome! I used it everyday and loved it. However, MS did a very poor port to OS X. Camino and Safari and the best Mac browsers out there currently. It would be nice to see MS put as much effort into the OS X version of IE as they did the OS 9 version. They could really make a killer app in OS X if they'd only try...you can do SO much more in OS X. For now I'll stick with Safari. |

| Who uses IE for Mac anyways?? Unless it's for OS 9, but for OS X they're better and faster browsers out there. Camino all the way baby. Now only if someone would write a program to import Camino bookmarks to Safari then I might switch to Safari. |

IE for Mac is maintained by a different group (in a different state!) than IE for Windows, so the poor schmuck whose quote has been taken out of context this week probably wasn't talking about anything other then IE for Windows.
Either way, it shouldn't matter because most Mac users tend to vocalize the same attitude as kirk26. In reality, it does matter because IE for Mac remains a top browser and most Mac users would hate to lose it, even if they won't admit to using it. |
