AOL pulls Nullsoft file-sharing software | |

A day after developers at America Online's Nullsoft unit quietly released file-sharing software, AOL pulled the link to the product from the subsidiary's Web site. The software, called Waste, lets groups set up private, secure file-sharing networks. The product became available on Nullsoft's Web site on Wednesday, just days shy of the four-year anniversary of being acquired by AOL. Waste is a software application that combines peer-to-peer file sharing with instant messaging, chat and file searches. Users can set up their own network of friends and share files between each other. The features of Waste are similar to those of file-swapping services such as Kazaa and the defunct Napster, but the difference is that only small networks of people (up to 50, according to the Web site) can use it. The software also offers encryption and authentication to prevent non-invitees from accessing the private networks. | ||

If this were the first time, I would agree with AOL that they can take back the GPL license. No license or contract is ever valid if offered under fraudulent representation. If Frankel used company resources (time, systems, whatever) and wasn't granted permission to do so for a personal project, then he didn't have the right to license it to anyone under any terms, GPL or otherwise.
But AOL seems to keep Nullsoft on a very loose leash, like the kid whose mom lets him run out-of-control while she waits in line at the bank. After you wind up with his gum in your hair, she barks "No" at him once, then goes back to ignoring him while he pees on your shoes. With a half-million unemployed tech workers running around, surely AOL can replace Frankel or any other developer in a heartbeat. Since they don't seem interested in doing so, I say let them be responsible for Waste. |

Others have pointed out that the capabilities of this software is essentially similar to the ThreeDegrees stuff Microsoft is working on.
Only it's a very poorly architected. :( |

Nah, I don't think it's like 3 Degrees at all.
It's more like gnutella with security and chatting abilities. |
