Upgraded to Windows XP yet? If not, you might miss your chance, because Microsoft Corp. MSFT.O is already working on the newest version of its operating system, code-named Longhorn, due for release in 2005. Although Windows XP, the most current version of Windows, is just 20 months old, the world's largest software maker is betting that users will be ready to upgrade within the next couple of years as personal computers become more powerful, faster and affordable. Details about the new operating system remain scant, but Microsoft has already started soliciting feedback from hardware makers and software developers on key features of Longhorn, such as its graphics and security capabilities. | ||

| I guess its just impossible to write a Microsoft story and not include the obligatory "Linux is growing" phrasing. Last I checked, Linux was NOT growing on the desktop side. But that makes for a boring story. |

Just from the blurb, the article seems kind of idiotic....
"Although Windows XP, the most current version of Windows, is just 20 months old..." "MSFT.O is already working on the newest version of it's operating system..." This is one of the longest periods that Microsoft hasn't released an OS and they are saying "already"? |

"Longhorn sort of continues Microsoft's insistence and belief that the desktop personal computer is best served by a fully high-powered device," said Dwight Davis, a strategist at Summit Strategies.
Insistence? I think not. The new UI features can be scaled back if you don't have the hardware or don't want to use them. They can take advantage of higher-end hardware (which by the time it's released might not be so high-end), but there's no requirement for higher-end hardware. |
