I want to talk to you about buying Microsoft software. My point is simple: don't do it.
Do not buy Microsoft software because Microsoft is not an ethical company. Microsoft is a company that took its legal desktop monopoly (yes, it's legal to have a monopoly) and, like all monopolists, illegally abused their position to drive an innovative competitor out of business. We all know the story of Netscape; how Microsoft perceived Navigator as a threat, bundled Internet Exploder in Windows for free, and basically drove Netscape off the Windows desktop for good.
Do not buy Microsoft software because Microsoft lies. Microsoft, throughout its trials with the DOJ over its monopoly abuse, constantly claimed that the DOJ was threatening its right to "innovate." The last thing I can remember Microsoft "innovating" on its own was MS Bob. This is perhaps why Microsoft quickly realized that the best way for it to "innovate" was to continue copying Apple; it gets more bang for it's unspent buck that way.

this will ensure a much quicker death of the apple platform... and relegate them much quicker to their new destiny... a sonicblue clone.

I don't think that anything can speed up Apple's demise! they are already at full speed.

Microsoft users should not buy Apple hardware!
Apple is not an ethical company, they actually sell things for money!

perhaps Dee is right... we should all promote the idea of "No MS software on Apple hardware".
A movement like that would have Steve Jobs on stage at MacWorld pleading users to buy MS software. That would be funny... although he's basically done that already. What a whore.

This article was written by SteveJack. If you ever watched the old MSNBC BBSes before they closed up, you would know that this person (and I use that term loosely) is the Apple equivalent of Stallman. But where Stallman can be thought of as a kook, SteveJack was a completely deranged individual. His arguments often degenerated into him posting to his own messages (the first one posted by Steve, the response by Jack, which is where he got his alias) with the reply thanking the first for enlightening him and showing him the true way of computing. He said that Apple should keep their prices high because he did not want the poor to be able to use the same computer he used. He claimed he carried a gun so that he ever ran into Bill Gates he could shoot him. He praised some of the dictators of the time (such as Milosevic) for getting rid of the unwanted people of the earth. And he said he had a crippled son, and the reason the son was crippled was because god wanted to show him how great he really was.
If you ever read some of his trolling, you would understand just how messed up this zealot really is. With friends like this, Apple has enough enemies.

#11: I think you are missing my point. Every camp in the OS debate has their odd ball, including Windows. And while getting a chuckle from the way somebody looks, dresses, etc (I laugh every time I think of my cousin dressed up in his Star Trek uniform), this guy was completely different. Yea, it was funny when he would put out his monthly "10 predictions for the next year" with #1 always being Microsoft's stock price going so low that apple would buy them, or his claims that his Apple running X86 emulation software was so much faster running Windows than his dual Dell desktop PIII, that he threw away his Dell (he did not want to give the desktop to charity because he did not want people to even see Windows).
I know a number of Apple users, and yes, they are fanatical about it, but overall they are quite normal. I also know a number of fanatical, weird looking Windows users. Some of them are normal, some, well… I am also sure that there are Windows users who are as hateful as the author of the linked article. But this guy made claims that Apple would save humanity -- and I don’t mean in the tongue-in-cheek joking “Java will do anything, even cure cancer” way, but he quite literally believed it. There are people on all sides who post to activewin that say some things that are hard to believe, but SteveJack was much worse than you could imagine.

How old is the average poster here? I've noticed lately that the comments are making less sense. And the posters seem to not know much about the history of personal computing.
"Apple ? irrelevancy hurtling to oblivion. "
Comments like that are simply embarassing to the people here who know what they're talking about.
And making silly comments about what you think a certain group of people look like? Childish.
AW Staff, why not implement a rating system so those of us who choose can filter out the silly postings. An intelligent exchange of ideas can be interesting, but that's far from what is going on here. This site is quickly becoming the Jerry Springer Show of computing news sites.

#13 - Slight corrections:
IE 2.0 sucked and Netscape prospered, and filed suit against Microsoft.
IE 3.0 was ok, and gained 40% market share. Netscape sticks with the suit.
IE 4.0 was better than Netscape. Netscape still hoping suit will work.
IE 5.0 was way better and there was no Netscape 5.0 so Netscape decided to go open source ... oh, and that suit thing.

I feel sorry for Apple when reading articles like this--these uniformed fanatics are more an obstacle to switching than the technical issues. If I were a big Mac user, I would be embarrassed by comments like these. I don't want Apple to fail--I really do want them to succeed, but I wish their fans would swallow a hefty dose of reality. This type of thing does far more harm than good to their "cause." I think the whole idea of having a "cause" when it comes to a computer/OS kind of puts people off and makes them wonder, "What is wrong with these people?" To me, it's a bit scary to use the term "evangelism" in reference to OS advocacy, no matter who is using it.

#18 - You're correct... I was exaggerating a bit. Netscape didn't actually file suit at that point, but they certainly began lobbying both the FTC and the DOJ by early 1995. (This is discussed in depth in David Bank's book "Breaking Windows".)
It wasn't until 1996 that the government began their investigation on behalf of Netscape and various other Microsoft competitors... oh... I mean... on behalf of consumers. :-)

If it weren't for the Demoncrats, Apple would have already been a defunct company, or at least not making computers anymore. No, the lesbian mass murderer of Waco, Janet Reno, did her best to try and kill Microsoft. She failed miserably. Now it is time to kill Linux, and put it out of its misery. We need one standard, one market, and that is Microsoft.
