Microsoft Expects Slow Start for Security Plan | |

Even though major hardware makers will support Microsoft's Next-Generation Secure Computing Base from the start, the company says it expects users won't jump to embrace it at first. "A small, single-digit percentage of PCs shipped in the year after [NGSCB] becomes available will support it, ramping up to double digits the year after that," says Peter Biddle, product unit manager at Microsoft's security business unit. "I am not sure if it will ever be in 100 percent of the systems." Microsoft detailed its strategy at its annual Windows Engineering Hardware Conference (WinHEC) in New Orleans this week. | ||

From all what I have read about NGSCB, I cannot imagine that we -endusers - even want to pay for a chip that is designed to limit the use of our PC.
From all examples I have read, only a hand-full is really in advantage for end-users (preventing virusses and hackers gaining acces to your files). For the rest it is all bad. Worse, the anonymous Internet is over. Everything is autenticated, every step is know, and available for tracking & tracing & analysis (even by the governements), the new spam is introduced (one-2-one marketing), and everything is granted or dismissed by licenses. The days of running illegal software and viewing copied media are over. One big flaw on this: we are not ready /wanting to pay thousands of dollars for all that software on our PC. Yeah yeah, we all have MS Office on our PC, but for that 5 letters and one expense worksheet a year we are not willing to pay $399. Same for media. The media companies want a bigger share of our wallet, well we are not up to that. See the failure of all the plus-services of your cable companies. It would be interested to see how Digital Rights Management (as a basis of NGSCB) overrules countries laws. Well we will see in some years. |
