Analysts: Slow road to new Windows | |

Microsoft is touting Windows Server 2003 as an operating system capable of pushing aside Unix and mainframes. But most customers will be upgrading from Windows NT 4--and at a slow pace, analysts say. Research firm Gartner estimates that between 60 percent to 70 percent of Windows Server users run NT 4, the grandfather of Windows Server 2003 that runs on millions of servers. Microsoft's own estimates are closer to 35 percent. But 64 case studies released last week suggest the number is much higher. The large number of customers that use NT 4 are in no rush to upgrade to newer software or are in the process of moving to Windows 2000, analysts say, and that could hurt Windows Server 2003 sales for some time. Gartner estimates that by the end of 2004, as much as one-third of NT 4 users will move to Windows Server 2003. "Two-thirds to 75 percent" will still be NT 4 customers by the end of next year, said Gartner analyst Tom Bittman. "There's a lot of NT 4 dark matter out there." | ||

Dark Matter is right, these admins are still living in the dark ages.
Gee get a clue and upgrade, Windows 2000 was a no-brainer upgrade.(sure we had issues implementing it, but look at everything it offered--very enticing). Now, we're looking at Server 2003 and while I am pushing for a 1-2 year full migration to it, chances are it will be a little longer, but hey we are running windows 2000 server, and we're deploying XP everywhere. It's just insane to say with NT4. |

Not trying to flame, but I know that it always comes back to the budget for all of the roadblocks that I run into trying to get new technology implemented.
Take for example the remote connect feature in XP, its being disabled enterprise wide. Why? Not because of security but because there is a worry that there will be training costs associated with training the helpdesk staffers learn how to use it. G'eeze. And how about an enterprise wide IM client, it wasn't the features, it wasn't the security, it wasn't that it was freakin free from MS, but it was the worry that, "if we deploy it then we have to support it and there will be increased costs in training the help desk staff." Arrghhh, still trying to get in corporatewide. How many of you are always running into the budget when trying to get new technology implemented? |

| I'm not saying ignore the budget. Businesses are in business to make a profit (it’s our driving force). It just is very difficult to try and get non-technical people to understand the real benefits of deploying new technologies that have a proven way of diminishing costs(like remote connect). It’s the resistant to change and adopt technologies that will promote a better work place, and allow for better data aggregation throughout the enterprise, and basically allow for higher productivity that I’m always running into. I get the budget thrown in my face when I can show that the technology will be beneficial and have a lower TCO, but people don’t want to change from what works. I agree that what’s in place may work, but a lot of technology if properly implemented can make the systems easier, provide a deeper value to the employees, and lower cost through for example server consolidation. |

Andrew Carnegie said something like "Worry about your expenses, and the profits will follow". But one must understand the big picture on expenses, that automation can have tremendous gains to staff productivity.
Looking at a technology decision strickly in terms of initial cost is foolhardy. According to recent benchmarks, Windows 2003 server may very well be twice as fast as Windows 2000 in running .Net apps. .Net is over 4 times the speed as VB6. What's that mean? Increased capacity with less hardware. Also if it's easier to manage that means fewer administrators needed to handle corporate growth. I realize that Linux is very popular with companies that have stagnated or are on the declining edge of the growth curve(Burlington Coat Factory, Winnebago are two examples I can think of), but for those of us who work for companies with positive growth these efficiencies play a lot into our ability to expand profits. |

FUD - "ROI calculation"
LOL! You can't do a strict ROI on technology, because many of the benefits are nebulous. Things such as competitive advantage, motivation of employees and so forth. Go read up on the Balanced Scorecard. |
