Looking to draw Windows users away from Apple's wildly popular iPod, Creative has released a mammoth update to its NOMAD Jukebox Zen portable audio player. The hard drive based Zen boasts an immense storage capacity of 60GB - twice that of largest iPod.
The NOMAD Jukebox Zen sports a sleek aluminum case and USB 2.0 connectivity for fast song transfers. Creative has priced the Zen at $400, $100 cheaper than Apple's new 30GB iPod.
Creative claims a battery life of 14 hours in the NOMAD Jukebox Zen, slightly higher than that of the iPod. The Zen offers the ability to edit playlists directly on the device, and a "Find" function to quality search thousands of songs. An optional FM Wired Remote is also available featuring an FM tuner and microphone.

I was holding off on buying an MP3 player until the Sanyo Yepp 900 was available but I might get this instead.
Here is a video showing the Yepp 900

IMHO the Ipod is over priced.

Daz, it is $100 cheaper than the Ipod and has twice the physical harddrive space.

That Yepp 900 is pretty killer. I wish they gave more info. It looks to be about the same size as the iPod, but with more features.
I just hope it's ~$200. That would be the price point I would jump for. Much more than that, and I can't justify dropping my iRiver 2.

I have a zen 20 gb and its pretty sweet. Negatives are the software. Creative software blows! Good thing for third party developers. RedChairSoftware http://www.redchairsoftware.com/ makes Notmad Explorer which makes this MP3 the very best player bar none. The one thing about all MP3 players that I don't like in general is that you have to have software on the client machine to transfer files. Id like the interface to be just like the 16 meg tiny usb keys that they make. Just plug it in and it works. No software to install or anything. I use my current zen like a portable hard drive carrying files to and from work. It works great but its only useful at home and work. I can't use it elsewhere without installing drivers.
Peace,
RA

Yeah that Yepp looks pretty sweet! I have a feeling that the Media2Go stuff is just going to blow everything away though... I am not going to purchase anything else until I see those products this fall.
As for the size of the iPod vs the Zen its totally negligible. Its bigger, but not by much at all.
Peace,

I currently have the Sony network walkman NW9. Wtf was I thinking when I purchased it ? I think that the form factor/size was the determining factor). For one the Sony Open MG software blows chunks. It then converts the songs to it's own music format not MP3. And those Sony memory sticks are not cheap, it came with 64 megs (roughly 15 songs).
As my previous post (#4) pointed out I am exploring the Sanyo or the new Nomad. Whichever one I get has to have a FM tuner and car battery charge capabilities. I plan to travel a lot this summer and want to carry all 30 gigs (+) of my muisc around.

well you can get fm on the new zen but you have to get the wired remote as well...
Evidently the wired remote is in very short supply. Buy.com supposedly has over 1000 on backorder. I ordered mine through buy.com in February and still haven't received it. . .

"IPod's can't play WMA format. "
The point being?
There are some of us who could care less about Microsoft's WMA format.

#35 - "There are some of us who could care less about Microsoft's WMA format."
Well, some of us want the best media format available to be playable on the devices we buy. WMA is the smallest and best sounding audio file format available, bar none.
I used to be 100% mp3, but I recently (within the past couple months) converted all my mp3s to WMA. This cut the total size of my collection (in megs) by more than half, and it sounds exactly the same as it did before.
What I really want is Windows Media 9 series WMA support. This would mean the same audio quality could be stored in between 35% to 40% of the space of mp3s.

The point I was trying to make is that $400 is ridiculous for any type of portable device like that. Especially if all it does is play MP3s and/or WMA's.
I mean, I think there are some portable PC's that are slightly larger than these devices that are fully-functioning wearable PCs, just add display.
For me to consider some type of portable music device, it's gotta be at least < $150. $400 is ridiculous. You could buy a high-end DVD player or a cheap all-in-one-box home theater system.
I guess if you're single and have tons of cash to blow, it's cool, but for someone on a budget, $400 is just out of this world expensive

Yeah, I went to go drool at the new iPods today in the Apple Store..... they are VERY nice. I especially love the touch sensitive wheel and the new touch sensitive buttons for getting from song to song.
TechLarry, and your point being? Obviously HE cares about WMA, it is on HIS list of criterion for a portable mp3 player.
Instead of being a complete jerk, why not try to add something to the conversation?
