Apple's music: Microsoft's sour note? | |

Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple on Monday launched the new service, which makes a catalog of about 200,000 songs from all major record labels available for download to a computer. Liberal licensing terms mean the songs also can be burned to CDs or moved to portable music players, such as Apple's iPod. Apple charges an average of 99 cents per song. While some record labels have called the music service an "experiment," analysts see huge potential for Apple to stall or potentially derail Microsoft's own digital media strategy if, as expected, it brings the service to Windows as well as the Mac. "There's a possibility that Apple could do an end run around Microsoft...particularly) if Apple makes the service available to Windows users," said IDC analyst Roger Kay. | ||

Apple's music service will not succeed as long as it's trivial to pirate music.
At any rate, I would consider using it if the price per song were more like 50 cents, and the price per album about $6.00. |

"It is not enough to sample a song you have never heard before but might consider buying if you like it."
I think 30 seconds is enough. I've bought many albums from cdnow based off just listening to the samples from tracks. It gives you a general idea as to the quality of the artist. I divide albums into four categories. 1. Those which suck, and I don't want to hear. 2. Those which rock and put out solid albums which get lot's of radio play. (U2 Joshua Tree, Alanis Morisette Jagged Little Pill, Van Halen 5150, etc.) 3. Those which have one good song and I hate the rest. i.e. the one hit wonder. ChumbaWumba comes to mind. 4. Those which are incredible albums but may get very little air play, maybe one or two songs. (Tori Amos, Radiohead, Moby, Sting, etc.) I tend to focus my purchases into categories 2 and 4. I could care less about category 3 because the music is usually overplayed on the radio anyhow. Online music of this sort focuses largely on category 3. One song at a time and you create compilation discs. Frequently artists who you might think are in category 3 actually fit into 4. I think having the music samples available as cdnow has done, or as I've seen with some music stores, really helps you in determining this. |

| It was basically confirmed yesterday with a news advert asking for Windows programs to create iTunes for Windows. Personally I prefer iTunes over WMP as its far easier to use, has great features and runs perfectly. |

Well I checked it out. I still say pressplay has a much better interface and way of listening and searching for music. I didn't know about Apple's drm stuff thought it was just like pressplay's. In actuality you can do pretty much whatever you want with your 1 dollar songs. However, the quality of the music sucks balls. Honestly, I tried everyone's favorite U2 Bloody Sunday and it doesn't "sound" near as good as my ripped version from cd in wmp.
For me the beauty of Pressplay is I just enjoy listening to new music. For 10 bucks a month I can listen to everything to my hearts content. Its the exact same concept as XM radio. I always have great streams and the audio quality is superb. Now if I could pay 1 buck per song and have the same restrictions that apple put on theirs then I would be totally happy with it. In the end kudos to apple on their licensing, negative on music quality, and I will be sticking with Pressplay. As for iTunes vs. WMP its a no brainer. You can skin WMP, you are stuck with Apple's stoopid chrome app look. WMP ripped music sounds better and the file management tools are much more powerful. |
