AuthenTec, a maker of fingerprint-recognition sensors, announced on Monday that it had signed a deal with Microsoft to integrate software support for biometrics into the Windows operating system. AuthenTec will create a reference driver that will be the example for other biometric hardware makers to follow in designing their own driver software. In addition, a new application programming interface (API) will allow software to access new hardware features made available through the drivers, said Michael Stephenson, lead product manager for Microsoft's Windows server group. | ||

| #2 I believe retinal recognition cannot be "defeated". It doesn't require any additional passwords or anything like that, you just have to have your eye handy. And you cannot kill someone (or remove their eyeball) and then use it to pass the recognition. It is far more secure than finger, voice or eye recognition systems. |

| Chris, Jagged is right! Security is something that you try to circumvent. You wouldn’t try to fake an eye (at least not with current technology). You would try for a buffer overflow or find a weak point in the system. Why try to break into a very strong door that has a very strong lock when there is a window in the back open? |

#4,#5 Obviously you'd look for a way around it, I only pointed out that you couldn't "borrow" someones eye incase anyone thought that you could. However I don't think this can be compared to WPA, as WPA was designed in such a way as to not require activation if it was given a key that followed a particular pattern (VLK) - this is the equivalent of having a "default template retina", where anyone who fits in that template is granted access - something that is not possible(? - maybe it is... but then the template would have to be so generic you couldn't limit it to just the people you want) to be done. As long as this is implemented correctly then there shouldn't be any backdoors (or windows) to get through.
#6 You are right, they are expensive, but so was fingerprint scanning when it first came out and if you are really worried about security why would you use a technology than can be hacked into with the use of a "gummy bear"? I really only mentioned it because some people aren't aware of retina scanning and just how secure it is and the longer they don't know about it, and hence don't use it, the longer it will stay being so expensive. |
