Windows Server 2003 won't run major Microsoft apps | |

USERS UPGRADING TO the latest versions of Windows Server 2003 will find some important older applications just won't work. And the applications that won't work aren't paltry little applets but heavyweightware such as SQL Server 6.5 and 7.0, according to Microsoft. Further, Windows Exchange Server won't work on Server 2003 including Exchange Server 2000 and Exchange Server 5.5, a report says on Techweb. | ||

Exchange 2000 will have a patch available shortly. Microsoft has already confirmed this.
As far as the other "major" Microsoft applications... what's the chance a company is going to be running Windows Server 2003, but also are still running SQL Server 6.5? Pretty small. Aside from Exchange 2000, this is a non-issue. |

If you still run sql 6.5 what the hell do you want with win2k3. Ex2k wont run on win2k3, this has been know for over 6 months. Another "get an easy headline" article of the Inq.

I'm more interested in whether or not applications that we've written using VB, C++ or .NET running on top of COM+, IIS, etc. work. Does the Oracle 9i client work? Any changes to MDAC, or is it 2.7sp1 like XP? Can I install .NET 1.0 on top to maintain compatibility?
It's answers to those kinds of questions that impact my bottom line. The ability to run Exchange 2000 is not important. If I need it, I'll run Windows 2000 server for now. That doesn't cost me extra money. |

| Wow, the ABMers are really hunting for ANY bad dirt on this new OS release. And the truth is... they cant find a credible story to over-report on. LOL. Thats a shame. I guess my eWeek will be even smaller this month. |

| flopzoid - I figured it had to do with IIS. Exchange 2000 uses the SMTP service for it's delivery mechanism, and if that has changed signifigantly. Perhaps Exchange uses CDONTS? That's been replaced with CDOSYS, but both existed with Win2k. |

flopzoid - Ahh, yes I believe you're right. That's how attachments are handled if I recall correctly.
Webdav is disabled by default on Server 2003. |
