Microsoft Adds an Unexpected Office 2003 Beta Refresh | |

Microsoft has added an unexpected extra beta release to its Office 2003 schedule, leading some company watchers to predict that Redmond will ship its desktop office suite later than expected. Company officials had said publicly that they expected the product to be released to manufacturing in June and ship this summer. Beta 2, which Microsoft began distributing to 600,000 customers starting in March, was supposed to be the final Office 2003 beta. But now Microsoft is planning to refresh its second beta some time "later this spring." The company won't say how much of a delay this will create, and is holding to its claim that the product will ship later this summer. | ||

| office 2003 is shaping up to be an excellent product. i'm glad that they are going to test it even more to make sure that the finished product is highly desireable. |

Refresh (in Microsoft beta terms) usually refers to a release that contributes no new features but eliminates a number of bugs. Sometimes they release them as Release Candidates, sometimes as Refreshes, it just depends on the length of the beta process. Server products and platforms (operating systems) generally have a longer beta cycle than applications, so it sounds like they're not sure the internal updates to beta2 will solve all the bugs that have been reported and want to give the public another shot...
Personally I think it could definatly use some more time to mature in the beta cycle. Although beta2 is significantly better than beta1, it is still not ready for prime time. We have it running on a number of development machines at one of the companies I work for and have encountered no show stoppers... but it is marginally slower at startup of the different apps than XP or 2000 was, and Outlook 2003 (which was the only app to recieve a complete GUI revamp) still has a number of glitches that could easily be weaned out before RTM. I don't mind end of July, August, or even September (although MS would surely like it on the shelves in time for back-to-school computer sales) if it means not waiting till SP1 to deploy it in an enterprise setting. | Anyone, notice that the synonys and thesaraus featers don't work on the right click drop down menus???---Its so glaringly obvious, some one should get shot.... |
