Microsoft will launch Windows Server 2003 Thursday, offering improved security and faster file and web server performance compared with Windows 2000, according to tests carried out by vnunet.com's sister title, IT Week. But Microsoft's security-by-default strategy and new advanced features will demand tough policy decisions. | ||

That's pure BS.... I had to actually go and turn all that off for my home network. "However, the Windows File and Print Sharing service runs by default, which provides an obvious entry point for hackers attempting to break into the system." It's a server, what do you expect? "He added that WS 2003's advanced storage management features also create a steep learning curve." Again, it's a server, you kinda need to learn how to do things. It's not really all that hard, though. |

| When was the last time Microsoft had a vulnerability in their file server or print sharing code? I remember the internet printing stuff, but those were problems with the IIS extensions, not with the print sharing code. |

| Agreed #1, I have Win2k3 installed at home and my usual password didn't pass the pass word complexity. It was it was turned on by default, that article is BS. And since I am running it as a domain control I couldn't change it on the local user and group snapin. I had to use the AD users and groups snapin and change it on the DC. Which means that I have to be an Admin on the DC. BTW IIS 6.0 is sweet. |

I'll have to verify that File and Print sharing service... I got the impression that wasn't enabled until I configured the server role.
It's a feature that you would probably not have running on say a database server or web server. I agree that learning curves are part of the environment. If he thinks this is steep he should check out similar functionality from say EMC. |

Honestly, I see no reason why you'd need file sharing on either a web server or database server.
Granted, I suppose it depends. I'm assuming your backup solution uses a service process to stream files back to the tape machine, rather than using file sharing to grab them. |
