Site News: New Logo & Updates | |

As you may have noticed, today we have a new logo for the website (designed by Cliff of course), new logos have been a regular occurrence since we began the site 5 years ago, but site design changes are not so regular so it is of note that the design for the next version of ActiveWin has been started. We plan to introduce a number of new features and improvements to both the site layout, and to existing features we already have along with a major shift behind the scenes with everything going .NET thanks to Will’s coding. Any comments are welcome. | ||

| Looks good. On a lesser note, I think it is about time to remove the snowman from the logo on the upper left hand of the page. It's Spring! |

I do the design Baarod, not the engine and the design is quite close to being complete ;o) so the site will run just fine on my Quackingtosh as i've made sure it looks and runs just as well across all browsers now! This post was edited by Byron_Hinson[AW] on Tuesday, April 15, 2003 at 12:10. |

.Net as in Active.Net or ActiveWin.Net will be AWESOME I bet. Keep up the good work Byron. Make sure that your site renders flawlessly under Internet Explorer 6.0 ;-) |

#10 - It's not a complete reworking of the site so don't worry, it will still have the same story layout just look better and load faster.

AH!!!!! The new logo makes me think that Neowin has infected activewin. Sorry It just looks too colorful and kidish for me. It reminds me of the new snazzy windows XP theme... I don't expect you to please everyone, but maybe make the site skinable(so we can switch back to the old way).
Keep up the great work! Activewin.net sounds kinda cool too, if it were only about .NET |

From what little hints Will has given me about his new creation, it sounds pretty cool, I can't wait!
As for performance, ASP.NET is significantly faster than ASP out of the box, not to mention with some smart design, so performance should be way up after this. That is, assuming Bob didn't throw tons of extra features at Will and now not only does he have to replicate the current site, but add all these extra new features in! hehe |

#16: I am sure skinnable is on the way ;o) As for color - I think it looks fine, I welcome more color into the site and gradually over the years we have changed from an all black website to this current one, the next version of ActiveWin will also add some more color to the site, although not a major difference over this one, a logo is supposed to stand out after all. I have to be careful with how i do the site layout as I know far more people around me would probably prefer us to be multicoloured instead of the gray style I have here now and prefer as we were one of the first sites to go for that style, and not following the crowd is one thing I prefer to do.

Ahh don't let em get to ya Cliff. Good job on the logo!
One thing though... I think it would look even better if you emblazoned RedAvenger r0xx0rs! in bold red on top of the logo... Hmmm... Yeah that would be pretty good... On web design stuff I tend to like bling bling type stuff. AWin isn't up to bling bling status yet but I have faith. On a side note if you guys haven't seen homestarrunner then you have to watch it: http://www.homestarrunner.com/sbemail.html Check out the one called dragon... And lay off the Awin guys. Sheesh its not like they get paid to do this stuff... Its a labor of love and for that we should all be thankful. |

| #26: In fairness to Cliff he didn't say anything about you not commenting, he put his points across. Personally I think his work is excellent, I love the logos he has done on the site. You are right you don't have to like the design of a site but can love the news, personally I want people to enjoy both, thankfully it seems like you are in the minority in terms of disliking the graphics and design of the site...hopefully we can please a few more people with the next site design, but hey, we won awards for site design, graphics and navigation over the last few years from a number of actual proper magazines so that's why we stick with what seems to work best. |

The site "appearance" is excellent in my opinion. In fact, I can bet that the new update will make it all that much better. The only problem I have is with the use of space on top as well: 1. You have your banner ad 2. You have your navigation bar 3. You have your logo 4. You have your headline 5. THEN you have your first news article I can only see one artice at first glance of the page without scrolling: http://www.mvps.org/msn/active.htm (btw, I am using build 0.5 of Phoenix, which doesn't like your navigation bar as you can see in the screenshot that I posted. That is the only thing I would nitpik about. I like to see the content right up front. | A real minor thing, but with the redesign, can we have a Favorite Icon? So when I click 'add to favorites' I get a nice little Activewin logo? Loads of sites do it and my favourites list look so much better with them :-) |

| A lot of the time it is almost at maximum, especially when we are linked to by bigger sites. We can't do much about the bandwidth problem though, its too expensive for us to expand on it currently. |
