Early adopters of Windows Server 2003 (WS 2003) will see better performance and security, according to tests of final code in the IT Week Labs. However, administrators may face compatibility problems. File serving is an average 20 per cent faster with WS 2003 than with Windows 2000 Advanced Server, and the product's integrated IIS 6.0 Web server shows an 11 per cent improvement over previous versions, as well as better security. | ||

I still have problems when configuring the OS. Like, say, I open up the AD User and Computers console (any mmc snap-in will do this from time to time) and it sits there and waits a good 30secs (at least) before it opens.
I installed Portal Server 2.0 (which is basically just an IIS plug-in) and it's incredibly slow, I don't know if it's IIS 6 or the fact that Portal Server is doing a lot of stuff. |

CPUGuy - I just installed Windows 2003 at home, but...
If AD is taking a while. One thing to maybe just verify is that there isn't some name in there that it's looking for and can't find. Like maybe a domain controller that no longer exists? Just a thought. When I first learned about Win2k I was told there was no difference between PDC and BDC, that all levels of domain controllers were the same. Well that's not true. You have about 5 different types of master machines... schema, RID, infrastructure and so forth. If you take out the first machine you installed the domain to, you can cause some issues unless you switch mastery over. |

| I just installed Windows 2003 server to my machine "server" at home. It's definately faster... it's interesting. Lot's of new features. We'll have to see how it goes. |

| It's not just the AD console, though, just every couple of times I open up a console snap-in it takes forever to load, other times it loads instantly. |

CPUGuy,
I have used win2003 for couple of months now and never have the problem you described. Somewhere in your system, there is something that isn't compatible with win2003. |
