States voice Windows XP concerns | |

The attorneys general of six states on Friday added their support to the government's antitrust case against Microsoft and expressed concerns about how the company's new Windows XP operating system will affect competition in the software industry. In a letter sent to Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer, Vermont's William Sorrell and five other attorneys general said they wanted to "add our voices to those calling on Microsoft to remedy the antitrust problems that are now evident." "We are concerned that Windows XP may involve additional unlawful attempts by Microsoft to maintain its operating system monopoly," Sorrell wrote in his letter to Ballmer. | ||

There is nothing new in XP that wasn't in WinMe that could "affect" competition.
So basically, this is just total BS, probably brought on by people who either a) don't have a clue, or b) got payed off by MS rivals. |

I work for a state agency and know that they are under pressure by MS to upgrade now, or pay big time in the future. MS is pickin a fight, and now they have one. When the states are basically being forced to upgrade, how do you think they should respond. Keep in mind we are talking about workstations here, not servers. "
Oh No! You mean they may actually have to upgrade? Damn! I was hoping to be able to use Windows 95 for another 30 years. Get a clue... it's obsolete. They're not being forced to upgrade at all for 2 reasons. 1) Nobody HAS to upgrade. Why don't people get that? 2) If companies / states / etc don't get on board with the new licensing program, they simply have to pay more. There's nothing that says they can't buy new versions later. Honestly, I'd rather have the government pay a few hundred thousand for software, than a few hundred grand for a hammer. Is the new Licensing 6.0 a good way to do things? I don't think so, but it's not my call. This is purely a case of the state governments finding themselves in a position where they could have to pay more money later on if they don't act now... and we all know how quickly governments move. They're pissed because they actually have to make a decision, and they're trying to bully MS over it. The State AGs can go screw, as fas as I'm concerned. They're useless anyway. |

ob·so·lete (adj.) Outmoded in design, style, or construction Are Win2k and Office2k obsolete? I wouldn't say so, not yet anyway. Microsoft still offers support for them... unlike Windows 95. "Second of all, my state in particular is extremely concerned about the security issues that come with XP..." Ok, so now the government is going after Microsoft because of Security issues? No, they're not. Keep your opinions and the facts separate. If security is a concern for you, wonderful. It should be. This, however, has absolutley nothing to do with the case in point. "...not to mention the fact that they just got Win2k." Good for you. Don't upgrade. "Since there is only one viable option for the desktop, we must buy Windows. Why can't you recognize that as fact[?]" So why is it Microsoft's fault that their product is the only 'viable option' for the desktop? It's not their fault that Apple just can't seem to catch on, and that Linux isn't ready for the desktop prime-time yet. #12, I agree with you. I don't mind the IM and Media programs being installed, but I would still like to see an option to remove them. |

Right. So really, what we should do is make the internet, which is supposedly this revolutionary communications tool, virtually impossible to use for people who have no idea how to run a computer. There's good thinking. Let's make it so mom and dad have to buy a new computer, THEN select a web browser ("a web-what?") and install it, and configure it, etc... etc... etc... Then, let's repeat it for a media player so that they can actually play sounds, and maybe a chat program, too... but it's ok, they're really easy to find, especially for the computer-illiterate... who don't know how to install a web browser. Me: just download AIM from AOL.COM, Dad. Dad: What the hell did you just call me? This isn't about monopolizing the market, this is about making computers easier to use. You shouldn't have to be a CS major to use a computer as a communications tool. It's nice to have the functionality there so that people don't have to wonder what an MP3 file is, or what to do with it. And guess what... you can still install other programs. I don't use MSN Messenger, and I only use WMP for WMA files, and playing videos. I still prefer WinAMP to any other audio player out there, and it works fine. I still just QuickTime (yuck) and Real (double yuck), and they work fine as well. "#14, Ummm actually what I stated is correct. This state is very concerned about security issues, not just with XP, but every single MS OS they that is run on our servers. It has easily cost millions of dollars because of the downtime we have experienced in our networks. That is not personal opinion, but fact. Why don't you call some of the IT professionals in your own state and find out how worried they are before you shoot your mouth off. I'm willing to bet they would be experiencing the same problems. " I don't give a rat's ass if they are concerned about it, the point is that it has nothing to do with the state's case against Microsoft, and it wouldn't be a problem if the "IT professionals" knew how to secure it. If you want to use something more secure, go right ahead... nobody cares. The case is NOT about security issues, and it never has been. |
