COMMENTARY--"An easy way to positively impact your business." That's how Microsoft is describing Office 2003, which premieres today in the form of a 15-disc beta kit that will soon be appearing in about 500,000 mailboxes. That's real, old-fashioned postal mailboxes: This is a lot of software. Take a moment to savour the chutzpah it takes to hand someone more than a dozen CDs--weighing almost a pound--and then claim that whatever happens next will be "easy." Then remember that this is Microsoft we're talking about, and that the normal rules don't apply. | ||

Probably because the number of people that have a CD-Rom vs. a DVD-Rom is probably 10 to 1. |

| Brian, I find that highly unlikely... also Microsoft makes a DVD version of Encarta, which is far less than 16 CDs. |

You find it unlikely that the world has a 10-1 ratio of CDrom/CDRW/CDR drives vs. DVD? I would do some research than if I were you. btw, Microsoft makes DVD versions of many things! |

wow, that is huge, I wonder how long it will take to download on Kazaa?
Now how do they expect those pirates in Hong Kong to make any money if they have to buy some many blank CDs? |

Most of these CD's are barely half full. In fact, I managed to burn the contents of 8 CDs onto 3 without ripping or modifying anything. I was able to squeeze 14 of them onto 4 CDs by modifying a couple of MSI files which were looking for specific volume labels if they detected that they were being installed from removable media (as opposed to network share or hard disk). The 15th disc could be tossed because 99.9% of its contents are duplicated on one of the others, and the other 0.1% is for non-English.

Brian, are you forgetting that ALL PC's now come with a DVD drive (even cheapo e-macs), and have been for a couple of years?
Heck, today, most computers are coming with DVD/CD-RW combo drives. If they make DVD versions of other software, then why not Office? Office is what makes Microsoft the most revenue, Office is one of the single biggest products that Microsoft offers, and it takes up MANY discs. |

DVDrom drives in computers are still quite rare. Certainly not the majority of machines being sold even today, much less computers existing in the past.

I think DVD for Office 2003 is a great idea as an option. I was talking about the BETA! The BETA is on 15 CDs. The final release of Office will not be. Example, if you were to get Office Standard or Professional you would have just two CD's. I think we are on a different page here. I was talking the beta, which really a benefit to offer the beta on DVD as many people don't have it. Offering it as an option may not be cost efficient for MS on a marketing and distribution/manufacturing standpoint. If they release Office 2003 as a DVD option though, I think it would be a great idea that would be followed by it's competitors. |
