For some, there is a driving urge to live without Windows, a digital-age-old quest to shed the Microsoft coil worn by most who have ever used a computer. Imagine being able to do all those computer tasks you've grown accustomed to - checking e-mail, writing Word documents, balancing your checkbook, storing photos, and listening to MP3 music - on a PC that doesn't run Windows. The thought has crossed many people's minds in this Microsoft-monopoly world, but the chief alternative to Windows - the Linux operating system - has provided little hope for anyone but true geeks and Macintosh users. | ||

This has been my major gripe with Linux since I started with Redhat 5.2
The only way Linux is going to compete is if the "Linux Faithful" stop being so defensive, and start fixing the problems. The number one problem with Linux is that it is designed for the office, not the home. Why would anyone need a root user if they are the only one using it? Drivers sometimes require a recompile of the kernel. That will not be tolerated by the masses. And finally, just because you can download it for free, doesn't make it worth it. People would pay for it if it were easy to use, and maintain. Linux needs to dump the GNU, and go for the EULA. This would make it profitable, and a true competitor. |

Almost every person that I know, including myself, has had a horrible time installing Linux. It has taken upwards of 3 hours or more just to intall the OS and find drivers for the existing hardware. Many still can't find some of their drivers and it renders their hardware useless.
Secondly, the Office Suites for Linux mutilate ALL existing Microsoft Office documents. Formatting is toast. And new documents created in the Linux Office lose formatting when opened in MS Office. Technical Support is expensive as well, since there is no Technical Support included with the free distros. |

but its most attractive feature is its "Click-N-Run" option, which allows a user to install programs by going to the www.lindows.com Web site and clicking on a link. It's convenient - but it comes with a price tag. A year's worth of Click-N-Run accessibility costs $99. All these costs start to make you wonder if Linux is really as free as everyone says.
Never mind the fact these programs are available for free on the web. I am not against Lindows and wish them the best of luck. Competition is good MS for and rest of us. But it seems like the Linux group in general don't give Windows a chance and are not fair in their assesment of it. They say stuff like Office (Word) is bloated and cost too much, well use WordPad it's free and should adequately meet their needs. They also say that Windows crashes too often. Most of us only restart XP when a new install or update requires so. Here is the cute part! Windows the worse OS in their opinion is the one that they are trying to copy the look and feel of. I find their attitude and non partially comments to be a turn off. |

| #6 Whilst Office XP installs fairly quickly... I've never timed it but I can't imagine it to take more than a few minutes... you have to admit that Office 2000 and 97 were shockingly slow.... performing half the install, then requiring a reboot followed by the rest of the install. Now whilst this didn't take 60 minutes, it did take a good 20 minutes or so to complete. |
