Huh? New? I think this is going to be an important release for Microsoft, but I'm betting it will largely be written off as a flop by the media--at first. Until other software takes full advantage of WinFS (assuming there isn't much in Longhorn itself), this feature will be rather unimpressive, particularly if it breaks any applications. I thought WinFS stood for Windows File System. "Windows Future Storage"--once we have it, it won't make much sense to call it future storage anymore, will it? Anyhow, any bets on how long it will be before Linux developers copy this idea and code it? |

| Whenever a person from Microsoft has mentioned WinFS, they've called it Windows File System. Unless "Future Storage" is a codename, it's a rather foolish title for the filesystem. |

That's true, stubear--I had heard about the plug-in architecture as well. If it works anything like the Installable File Service in Exchange 2000, though, I would be a little hesitant. It works pretty well, but there are some problems in that scenario with permissions and with low-level utilities like backup and anti-virus. Granted, it's a different scenario, but nonetheless I would guess that most if not all backup and anti-virus programs would need to be rewritten. Backup and restore may prove interesting depending on how the files are split out onto the database, I would think. And unless the legacy OS is on a separate partition for Virtual PC, I would think there's a chance for problems to occur there, too.

| cba-3.14, I know Microsoft is not the first to attempt it (or even use it), but perhaps they will be successful where so many others have failed. Obviously there are some benefits to it; I guess we can only hope they have learned from the mistakes of others. They are betting the company more or less on it, so it's a huge amount of $$$ down the drain for Microsoft if they don't succeed. |
