Microsoft quits OpenGL board | |

Microsoft has tendered its resignation from the consortium governing the OpenGL standard, signalling an intention to go it alone with its Direct3D graphics platform. Microsoft was a founding member of the Open GL architecture review board (ARB), and in a letter to ARB members seen by The Register, said it would pursue "focus our energies on improving and evolving our own Windows graphics platform", from mid-February. | ||

| This has been coming for a long time. When Windows XP was in Beta, there was talk of this. |

| EWWHWW, do you have any info on the why? Was it related to OpenGL2.0? SGI patents? It being a waste of time? ARB by-laws? |

"I can't think of any PC games to use OpenGL in a long time." Come on, sphbecker, I don't know what you know, but are you flat out lying or what? Do you not know about ID, Carmack, and Doom?
I'm not arguing pros/cons, but why are people so small minded to just focus on games. D3D is not used is a single modeling/CAD/animation program. I can't think of a single such app EVER created using D3D. |
