Sam Hiser, a technologist who spends much of his time promoting open-source alternatives to proprietary software, has an interesting way of describing the main difference between Microsoft's Windows operating system and Linux, its open-source competitor. "It's something I call the 'Windows pucker,'" Hiser says. "That's the feeling Windows users get when they're about to open a fifth program and they're so worried, they're clenching up their butt cheeks because they just don't want the system to lock." | ||

How old of a system is this guy talking about??? On my old home desktop system (Celeron 533, 128mb ram, Win98) I might have this worry, but I open 8-10 window son my Thinkpad (P3 800, 512mb ram XP pro) without even a thought to a lockup. Windows pucker....more like Linux Psychosis. ;)
Just more FUD. Linux has its uses, advantages and disadvantages, as does Windows. This opening paragraph really lowers my opinion of an otherwise reasonable article. |

The "windows pucker...” He must be referring to running Win 95(A) with 16 megs of simm ram! I run two Linux distro's and I am constantly confronted with the "linux labyrinth". That seemingly unending maze of “now what do I do” and “where the hell am I” or after numerous tries…”what the heck is the proper command to do this…?”
Sorry but linux is still the best way to waste time I've ever found! |

Articles like this only serve to illuminate the fact that many anti-Windows advocates haven't used the product they hate so much in at least 3 years.
If they had, they would realize their complaints have, for the most part, been long since resolved. |

I am waiting for his article contrasting Windows 3.11 for worksgroups and the lastest version of Linux.
What year was this article written? or better yet, what OS is he talking about Win95? Cleary he has not used Windows 2000 and I know that he has not used XP. |

| What I love is gator..... damn thing gets installed because no one bothers to read what they are saying 'ok' to and it doesn't have an uninstaller... nooooo.... you've got to manually figure what filename it actually is (GMT.exe, I believe, been a little while) and then head into msconfig and take it out of startup (although it's still sitting in the registry, just disabled), and then go in and track down where it is installed at and delete the sucker (however, still cluttering the registry). |

What a load...
I run a LOT more than 5 programs at once and even on an old 700Mhz office machine it's fine. I'd never do it under Windows 9x, but since 2K this has not been an issue. TL |
