Auditors clocked the NEC Express5800/1320Xc at a blazing 433,107 transactions per minute (tpmC), running the 64-bit version of Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition, and SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition (64-bit). Only one system has ever posted a higher TPC-C non-clustered score, but it achieved only 5 percent more performance—even though it had four times as many processors, and cost more than twice as much per transaction3. | ||

Not mentioned is that the top non-clustered result is about 1 1/2 years old. Nonetheless, this is quite an impressive achievement for Microsoft.
And where's Linux on this list? Granted this is an expensive undertaking, but the only TPC-C Linux entry is a clustered result (using Oracle, and not available yet) at 138,363 tpmC (vs. a year-older 709,220 tpmC result for Windows 2000 Advanced Server). And as for price/performance? Linux came in at $17.38/tpmC, vs. Windows 2000/SQL 2000 results ranging from $13.02 (at 410,769 tpmC) to $14.96 (at 709,220 tpmC). |
