SQL Server developers face huge royalty bills. How many, how much? | |

A Washington court ruling could see SQL Server developers liable for millions of dollars in licensing fees. The judgment concerns a contract dispute between Timeline Inc. and Microsoft, over three patents relating to datamarts. In Microsoft's interpretration of its licence with Timeline, published in a press release in July 1999, "all users of Microsoft SQL Server 7, Office 2000 and other Microsoft products that utilize this type of technology are unencumbered by Timeline's patents." | ||

Title should read - SQL Server developers may face.....
It is certainly possible to use SQL Server as a developer in a non infringing manner. But, thanks for the sensationalism, Register. I'm boycotting Register articles, so for those of you out there that are as well, but are still interested in this topic - http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/030219/190523_1.html Interesting, on Yahoo, the title is more inline with the truth "SQL Server Users Could Face `Staggering' Damages". |

In relation to other OLAP products, Microsoft's Analysis Services has a substantial share, but the number of SQL Server customers who are actually using Analysis Services (or have even installed it at all, because it is a separate Setup) is relatively small. Certainly not enough to use the word "staggering" unless you're just trying to be dramatic for the sake of Timeline's investors or the Register's pathetic excuse for journalism.
Timeline's press release really goes out of its way to hide the fact that this is solely an Analysis Services issue. They even mention DTS in a way that suggests DTS could infringe without being used to populate multidimensional stores. If there was anyone that Microsoft should squash like a bug... |
