Selling your company to Microsoft is the technology equivalent of selling your soul to the devil. That's what makes Intuit, which reports earnings today, so compelling. Way back in 1994, Intuit was oh so close to joining the dark side, but an agreed sale to Microsoft fell apart in 1995 after the Department of Justice -- in a brilliant bit of foreshadowing -- threatened to sue Microsoft for antitrust practices. | ||

LOL... selling your soul to the devil.
Let's see... here is what can come from selling to Microsoft: 1.) You become incredibly rich. 2.) Your technology is likely integrated into Microsoft's (assimilated? :-), and almost certainly reaches far more people than it would have before. 3.) You become incredibly rich. What's bad about this? Is it possible that Microsoft will charge more for the products/technologies they gain from smaller companies? Perhaps. But I'd say it's just as likely that you will get those technologies for free because Microsoft will simply include them as another feature of Windows, or another one of their products. Nobody has ever been able to give me a single example of Microsoft purchasing a company, and destroying the technologies that company was developing. Getting bought by Microsoft simply guaruntees your personal richness (hehe), and the wide spread use of your technology... if it's good. Now, this is not always the case within Microsoft for Microsoft's own technologies. Countless cool products were scrapped because of politics. This is a tragedy. It's ironic that 3rd party technologies seem to have a better chance inside Microsoft than the technologies their own engineers think up. In fact, .NET almost feel victim to this. Intuit does not have much of a future if things continue.
They blew it badly by including obnoxious DRM in Turbo Tax and Quicken is falling behind Money as the industry innovator in personal finances. |

#1 macross, you hit the nail on the head. If SUN/Oracle and others had spent the money on R&D etc. rather than on lawyers they would be in a much better position than they are now.
This is a perfect example of a competitor nutting up and whipping MS simply by providing a better product. However, I haven't used Quicken or anything else Intuit has produced but so many people buy it i'm just assuming its good. Oh, and I made a boatload on their stock when they hit 72 :) |

| I guess it will be the last year Intuit ever report such compelling earning. I have been using Quicken and Turbo Tax for almost 10 years now. No more! |

" When I did my taxes this year, I intened on using TurboTax as I have for the several years. But when I leared about their stupid Product Activation, and the massive problems people had because of it, I decided to use Taxcut instead. And my taxes got done just as well, and it was cheaper. It seems I wasn't the only one. When I went to CompUSA to pick up the tax software for the year, the TurboTax end-caps and shelf space was overflowing with boxes, while the Taxcut racks were nearly empty. I guess people voted with their wallets this year. It remains to be seen whether Intuit learned their lesson. My guess is they didn't, and they'll make up some sort of creative statement for their shareholders as to why this tax year is a bust for them. IU |
