Microsoft wins reprieve in Sun battle | |

Microsoft Corp. on Monday won a reprieve in its battle with rival Sun Microsystems when an appeals court stayed an order requiring Microsoft to include Sun’s Java programming language in its Windows operating system. The order, from the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va., comes the day before an order from a lower court was to take effect, requiring Microsoft to include Java in its Windows XP software within 120 days. The appeals court stayed the order while it considers Microsoft’s appeal of a lower court order requiring the Redmond, Wash.-based software company to distribute Java, a technology designed to let software run on different operating systems. In a statement, Sun Microsystems said it regretted the appeal’s court’s decision, saying the requirement to include Java would “benefit consumers and ... the Java community’s developers, enterprises and system vendors.” | ||

#3 The JVM is used by more than just Java Applets.
As for the appeal... the result isn't anything shocking and unthinkable..... what will matter in the end is the final verdict and it's highly unlikely MS will lose... especially given their past performances in court. |

| VB.NET is an abomination to .NET :( It's unfortunate that MS cowtowed to the VB crowd and made .NET the lesser for it :( |

matgarnz - I am proud to say I voted against the creation of COLA. Sheesh, there is nobody of any knowledge posting to that group, especially on the Linux side. RE Ballard and so forth. #14: VB.NET is a full .NET language. While I abhor the language syntax, it is technically as powerful as any of the other .NET languages.

Guys... the argument of VB.NET vs [Insert favorite .NET Language Here] is pointless.
There is NO SINGLE LANGUAGE that does it all in .NET. VB.NET has a few things it does better than C#, and visa versa. As far as #14 (FUD)'s comments: "Yeah, try doing asynchronous chunked HTTP transfers of 100MB+ documents in those..." Actually, not really a problem. I wrote a web service that accepted massive XML documents as an argument to a method. These documents often exceeded 500MB, and, using C#, I broke up the documents into data islands and processed them with the XML libraries in .NET. The processing involved creating database entires for data trees built from the XML documents. Some of these data trees were extermely complex, and involved searching over multiple data islands for certain nodes. The web service performed extremely well, and performed even better when I migrated the code into a remoting solution for use with .NET clients. All of this could have just as easily been done with VB.NET, and it would have performed exactly the same. |
