Microsoft Preps Windows XP Service Pack Updates | |

In order to comply with a preliminary injunction forcing the company to include Sun Microsystem's Java in Windows, Microsoft is preparing two updates to Windows XP Service Pack 1. An initial update dubbed SP1a is expected early this month and will be identical to the currently available SP1, but stripped of Microsoft's Java. SP1b will follow in June, featuring Sun's latest Java revision and meeting the timetable imposed by the court. U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz issued his ruling in late December and told Microsoft last month it had 120 days to implement the ordered changes. Motz agreed with Sun's claim that Microsoft was not allowing Java to compete by only supporting Redmond's own .NET platform. | ||

| Java = lame, slow, and annoying. Frankly, I wouldn't miss it if it was gone entirely (not even a MS JVM). I hope SUN implodes. |

I agree RedAvenger. I plan on waiting until SP2 to update again as I am perfectly comfortable with SP1. If Microsoft can change the courts mind by the time SP2 comes out, then I won't have to worry. If they indeed keep Java in SP2, I want an advanced installation dialog that allows me to eliminate the Java. In fact, it should be shown as an option during install, NOT turned on by default. GRRRRRRRRRRRR

| This is why I hate the courts and all this suing Microsoft stuff. I DONT WANT THE SUN JAVA CRAP! Last time I installed it on my own, I found it was complete crap. The system tray icon couldn't be removed, I got various loading and downloading dialogs when java applets were displaying, and half the Java applets I visited didn't work properly in it because they were made for the far more common MS Java implementation. I want to stick with the MS Java one, the courts shouldn't be able to tell me otherwise. The Sun Java better have an uninstall (although I too won't be upgrading until SP2 comes out), so I can put the MS Java back on... |

Check out the quote on the last paragraph of the article:
"Even when the updated service pack includes Sun's technology, customers have the option to load or not load Sun's technology" I hope it will prove true. |
