Sun, Microsoft officials face off in Java vs. .Net debate | |

Officials from Microsoft and Sun Microsystems debated the merits of their companies' respective Web services development platforms Wednesday, with a Microsoft executive taking a more combative stance than his Sun counterpart in pitting .Net against Java. Speaking at the OMG Integrate.2000 conference, Microsoft's Dave Wright, .Net Solutions architect in San Francisco and a former Java programmer, said Java is a "wonderful language" but has limitations in virtual machine and language constructs. | ||

Sun is making the time-honored mistake of ignoring the problem.
Novell, Netscape and many others before them have made this mistake. Microsoft takes threats seriously and is not afraid to identify the challenger(s) and point him (them) out. Sun is taking "Bah, they're not good. .NET and C# sucks and everyone knows it" nose-in-the-air approach which never works. Sun would do well to identify MS as a competitor/challenger and tackle them head on. Start the marketing campaign comparing Java's benefits to .NET's weaknesses, etc. But, alas, they won't do it. Sun will roll over and play dead and Java will be relegated to niche and all the MS-hatas will blame MS for it all as if MS controls Sun's strategic decisions. -d |

The Java platform requires compatability with the Java specification, he explained. "The license for J2EE says, if you're not compatible with the standard, you can't ship," Martin said, adding that Microsoft's C++ requires programming to manage transactions and the OS.
"In short, you're doing a lot of programming that's related to the underlying management of resources, and that's the most complex programming there is in many ways," Martin said. This is true of any unmanaged language, not just (MS) C++. Why not compare with the current MS-recommended toolset, .NET? And if the above statement about J2EE is true, what's with all the complaints from Java developers about incompatabilities between J2EE implementations? :-) |

Even the Java programmers that I know are migrating to .Net .Net = Future Java = Also ran |

From a high level propective Java is language while .Net is a development platform.
*I am sure that the Java guys are going to try and beat me up on that point |
