A lot of people are watching Miguel de Icaza, a bubbly young Mexican programming whiz behind an unusual project he named ``Mono,'' Spanish for monkey. Icaza's company, Ximian, has already produced software called Evolution that gives users of the free, open-source Linux operating system e-mail and calendar tools comparable to those that run on Microsoft's Windows operating system. | ||

When you cut through all the open sore hype, you get little "nuggets" like this occassionally: "Forrester Research has reported that just 10 percent of 3,500 top companies have implemented Linux for any tasks at all."
In another article about the "vaunted" Lindows OS, the author let slip that about 1,000 desktops a month were being bought. Huh? Total unit sales of computers per month averages over 10 million world wide. A story about a 1,000 unit vendor just isn't. Yet, we have hype story after hype story about this vendor. The tech press thinks that it is on some sort of mission to make open sore popular if they can just tell you one more time how "wonderful" it is. The reality is that it is going no where. Anyone working in the IT division of a Fortune 100 company knows that open sore is running on some appliances, but little else (it is running on less than .1% of the computers where I work, a top five financial services company). It just shouldn't garner the ink that it gets. |

| Ximian is an awesome company. I certainly hope they work with Microsoft as it will help to bring .NET to a larger audience. |

Doesn't Evolution just provide a new client frontend for OWA?
The same functionality can be obtained with any web browser, like Mozilla for instance. |
