New SuSE Linux Boasts MS Office Compatibility | |

Linux vendor SuSE has released software that enables Linux desktop users to run Microsoft Office programs. The company's Linux Office Desktop 8.1 can run such applications as Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and also includes StarOffice 6.0, a Linux alternative to Microsoft Office. "We find that people who have worked in Excel for years have built up a certain amount of macros" and do not want to lose them, SuSE vice president Joseph Eckert told NewsFactor. He added that Desktop 8.1 allows users to run Microsoft Office applications with "the stability and security of a Linux platform." The software accomplishes this feat by using technology from CodeWeavers, a third-party vendor. "It's not an emulation program -- it actually runs Office almost natively," Eckert said. | ||

Don't plan on running Office XP on it....
From the looks of the types and qualities of bugs they're fixing in their "new fixes/features" section for the latest version, I would be very suspect of any IT manager that thinks this is a great solution. http://www.codeweavers.com/about/press_releases/?id=20021104 |

I don't care what these bozos say. If it's not running on Windows; and if it is making calls to a system that isn't the programs native environment, then this is an emulator.
For example: look at MAME. It duplicates the original ROMS on a PC, runs the games and interprets the output (sound and video) in combination with passing through to the underlying program(s) the input (keybaord, joystick, etc.) That's an emulator. So is this, so is WINE, so is anything that attempts to get a non-Windows program to work on a non-Windows OS. Call it what you will, but it's an emulator. |

I think the difference is understood by quite a few here, linuxhippie, and it is an important technical distinction. I think you've accurately described what is not an emulation of a hardware interface, but an emulation of a software interface (Win32). On x86, of course, no hardware emulation needs to occur. However, emulating Win32--a software layer (an abstraction of sorts) above the core OS functions--is tricky business, and obviously fraught with problems when the core functions are implemented differently. It's like trying to shake hands with a foot.
Call it an emulation, call it whatever you like--it has a host of problems. |

| It's not a put-down to be an emulator. The Wine folks can say whatever they want, but they can't change what they are. What does Wine do? It immitates the existing Win32 API on non Windows platforms. IOW, it emmulates the Windows platform so Windows apps can feel right at home running on it. It seems rather foolish to me to even have this conversation. It's an emmulator, can we move on now? |
