WebEx Plunges Over Microsoft Competition Worries | |

Shares of WebEx Communications Inc. fell sharply Wednesday after Microsoft Corp. unveiled plans to jump into the Web-conferencing business. Late Tuesday, Microsoft said it had agreed to buy privately held PlaceWare Inc., a Web-based conferencing software company. Terms weren't disclosed. The prospect of Microsoft getting into any new business is cause for concern for entrenched industry players. The purchase of PlaceWare has raised the specter that Microsoft will gradually devour market share in the Web-conferencing arena, leaving little business for WebEx, and players like Raindance Communications Inc. and Centra Software Inc. | ||

I love it. Microsoft doesn't even actually have to do anything... they just have to suggest they'll enter a market, and boom, the competition dies.
Some might say this is a sign of an "evil empire", but I say it's further proof that when Microsoft enters a market they tend to quickly dominate it because they have the best ability to create the best product. |

| I sign a $4000+ invoice to Webex each month. So please understand when I say... I WELCOME strong competition, and I have little doubt that Microsoft will provide a nicely priced alternative. |

| We already use Placeware here. It works really well, but I have no idea how much we pay. |
